Implementation of real-time passenger flow monitoring software at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport

Smart Flows has been chosen by Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) to introduce a solution for real-time tracking of passenger flows through its terminals following a tendering phase.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this innovation would help to improve the entire passenger experience and recognize the risks of high passenger density in one region, in compliance with the current health protection requirements.

To ensure the best and safest experience possible, Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is following its strategy of maximizing passenger flows. The terminals, which are tiny relative to the amount of passengers they are expected to see each year are both an opportunity for travellers who can enter their boarding gate quickly and a detriment, with the possibility of saturating those areas at peak times.

The airport has already done comprehensive work on its facilities in order to maximize operating capital while maintaining a seamless experience for passengers. An additional step in which Nice Côte d'Azur Airport ensures the best possible experience for passengers is the introduction and deployment of this new program, which has already been implemented by major airports around the world. It is currently being implemented and by December 2020, the system will be fully operational.

The solution works by tracking the passenger density in the airport's boarding areas using anonymized Wi-Fi logs. In the event of crowding, it then alerts the operational teams at some points where passengers appear to gather: toilets, checkpoints, boarding gates, stores, etc.

In the light of the COVID-19 crisis, which has made it a priority to reduce groups of people gathering, this approach helps ensure that in addition to enhancing the customer experience, the multiple health initiatives already implemented within the airport are correctly enforced.

"Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Board of Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, said: "Smart Flows' Passenger Flow Management system is a highly useful addition to our portfolio of resources and services to further enhance the experience of our passengers: a smoother journey through the airport, even shorter waiting times and better health safety. This breakthrough is an undeniable advantage for our workers at the terminals, as well as our partners, airlines or commercial operators, to better calibrate their actions with the desires or needs of passengers.
