Testing new baggage check-in technology at Eindhoven Airport

Eindhoven Airport (EIN) has announced that it will be the testing ground for advanced technologies to make the airport more sustainable, flexible and intelligent.

In order to innovate, optimize and simplify a range of airport processes, Eindhoven Airport will allow the implementation of cutting-edge technology developed by Vanderlande and run tests in a live environment by making its facilities accessible.

Both organizations are located in the Netherlands' creative 'Brainport' area and will partner for several months (on a trial basis) with technology, design and information institutes to further speed up the project.

Eindhoven Airport, Vanderlande and baggage identification specialist BagsID will apply machine learning and technology for image recognition as part of the agreement. This will allow passengers to check in an item of luggage simply by taking a picture of it with camera equipment.

Eindhoven Airport also plans to begin testing a self-driving vehicle on the apron in early 2021, which will move luggage to and from aircraft autonomously.

Mirjam van den Bogaard, COO of Eindhoven Airport, said The aviation industry is facing numerous challenges and we are looking for ways to turn these into opportunities through innovation." For several years, we have worked closely with Vanderlande, who like us, wants to lead the way in applying modern strategies to improve the process at the airport. Our future plan is based on the belief that if various disciplines collaborate seamlessly, advances in aviation can be put into practice faster.

Mark Lakerveld, Vanderlande's Business Director-Airports, added: "Innovation is essential to further optimize airport processes and improve the experience of passengers." The airport of the future will be influenced by emerging technology, robotics and digitalisation.
