As transfer services resume, HKIA strengthens preventive health initiatives.

The Hong Kong Airport Authority (AAHK) has strengthened the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) health initiatives to prepare for the phased resumption of transfer/transit services by 1 June 2020.

Both passengers and airport personnel are required to wear face masks in all passenger-accessible areas of the restricted area of HKIA until further notice, including departure, arrival and transfer/transit passengers.

Other methods of prevention include:

  • Upon arrival, all transfer/transit and arriving passengers must undergo body temperature checking.
  • Transfer/transit passengers are expected to immediately go straight to the boarding gates for their connecting flights.
  • Shift/transit passengers are issued stickers for identification purposes at transfer points.
  • When standing in queues, passengers are advised to maintain a safe physical distance of at least 1.5m from each other.
  • At each arrival gate and throughout the entire terminal, alcohol-based hand rub dispensers and sanitising floor mats are available.
  • The boarding gate area and airbridge are washed and disinfected after each flight that arrives.
  • At service counters, including airline check-in counters and customer service centres, protective screens are mounted.
  • For transfer/transit travelers, dedicated dining areas are set up.

Measures for airport workers provide temperature control upon entrance into the terminal and personal protective equipment and disinfection supplies are given to frontline employees.

To remind staff of the safety steps, a regular briefing takes place and COVID-19 assessments are given by the Department of Health for airport staff.

Vivian Cheung, Executive Director, AAHK Airport Operations, said: "It is of paramount importance for HKIA, as a major international aviation hub, to resume transfer/transit services on the basis of protecting the health and safety of passengers and airport staff as our top priority." We have worked closely with the government, airlines and our business partners to put in place a series of comprehensive steps to ensure that transfer/transit services are resumed smoothly and passengers have a healthy end-to-end journey.
