Palanga Airport starts arrangements for rebuilding works for 2021

Palanga Airport (PLQ) has started plans for major reconstruction work scheduled for the autumn of 2021, with the reconstruction of the airport runway and other works to be carried out, including the expansion of the taxiway and other sections of the apron.

The hunt for a contractor for these works will be revealed in September 2020 and, in the second quarter of 2021, the contract will be signed with the chosen partner. Reconstruction work is expected to begin in September 2021, during which time the airport will be closed for a total of 45 days for the shortest required duration.

All the airport facilities has a working life of 10-15 years. It must be renewed or rebuilt afterwards. The Palanga Airport runway was last rebuilt in 2007, and the apron was rebuilt in 1996-1997.

According to Laura JoffÄ—, Executive Director of Lithuanian Airports, Palanga Airport's operator, the rehabilitation of the airport's infrastructure is necessary to ensure aerodrome safety, to comply with environmental requirements and to prevent potential flight restrictions if such work is not carried out.

According to her, the work at the airport will be suspended for a minimum period of 45 days during the reconstruction process and the duration of the work will cover the period from September to October 2021, which will be stated after the contract has been signed. Both the most acceptable meteorological conditions and the possible minimum loss of passengers were taken into account when determining the best time to carry out the work.

The airlines operating at Palanga Airport have already been alerted to scheduled operation, which means that the flights and schedules will be changed accordingly. Business partners working at the airport, regional municipalities and related organizations have also been told.

"If the reconstruction is completed in time, we expect a smaller number of passengers than in later years," JoffÄ— said. Let's not forget that Palanga Airport was the fastest growing airport in the country in 2019, also exceeding the average of many European airports, so we need to think about the future and create conditions for the further development of the seaside airport, which cannot be done without the right infrastructure.
