To build the Kempegowda Airport Metro link, BIAL and BMRCL

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to take forward their joint efforts through a special Public Private Partnership (PPP) with a creative funding mode to set up the 4.95 km segment of the ORR-Airport Metro.

This Metro connection to Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR), which is expected to be launched by December 2024, would provide residents and business commuters from all parts of the city with a sustainable and efficient mode of transport, making it easier for the city to realize its economic potential and to ease traffic congestion on the roads leading to the airport.

BMRCL will build the Metro section of the airport, as well as undertake civil and electro-mechanical works and other relevant structures, works and properties. The two Metro stations that will be located within the airport limit will be built, operated and maintained by BIAL.

This section of the airport is part of the total 56km Metro line from the Central Silk Board Junction to Kempegowda International Airport terminals via KR Puram and Hebbal, called 'ORR-Airport Metro.' BMRCL is establishing the ORR-Airport Metro, which is likely to serve 780,000 commuters every day. A daily ridership of 60,000 commuters is likely to see the two stations within the airport borders in 2024, growing to 188,000 commuters by 2041.

It is anticipated that civil work on the Airport Metro section will begin in March 2021. In five sets, the tenders for civil works for the 56km Metro viaduct and 30 stations have already been applied for. The work on the first two packages from Central Silk Board Junction to KR Puram are likely to commence in December 2020, and the three packages from KR Puram to the airport are likely to commence in March 2021. Priorities will be given to the airport section and the section from Hebbal to the Trumpet Junction.

Nearly two-thirds of the 94 acres of ORR-Airport Metro land needed has been acquired and handed over to BMRCL. Often for the Metro depot near the Trumpet Intersection, the balance land is. The shifting of services, such as power, water, street lights, gas and telecommunications, is underway by the agencies concerned.

At BIAL, we are extremely excited to participate in enabling Metro connectivity to and from Bangalore Airport, creating the potential for easy access between Bengaluru and the airport," said Shri Hari Marar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bangalore International Airport Limited. " BIAL is committed to providing travel solutions to ease the passenger journey, and there is a growing need to deliver seamless experiences.
